Bipartisan Bills, Bureaucracy and Books

Statement

The month of January has flown by; and, I wanted to take a moment to update you on some of the highlights from my time in Washington and New Hampshire.

Last week, I launched a new initiative to shrink the size of the federal government and save billions in taxpayer dollars by introducing a bipartisan bill to end duplicative government programs.

Washington's irresponsible spending habits have wasted billions of your hard-earned dollars to fund programs or projects that already exist, resulting in the crowding out of necessary funding for programs that serve our common goal of helping those in need.

In order to eliminate the waste plaguing our government, I introduced H.Res 45 -- a bipartisan bill to alter the way legislation is brought to the House floor. Under H.Res 45, every piece of legislation awaiting consideration by Congress would receive a "duplication score" by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service -- to identify whether or not new bills create programs or projects that already exist in our government.

This is a common-sense approach that will allow our government to finally take sizable bites out of our debt and deficit while ensuring the safety net is protected for all Americans.

Despite the snow on Saturday, we were able to host our first townhall where we discussed our skyrocketing national debt, ways to spur middle-class economic growth and reforms to our mental health system. I also had the opportunity to unveil my new bipartisan legislative initiative -- Operation TAXPAYER, which aims To AX Persistent Abuse of Your Earned Revenue -- to save billions of your hard-earned dollars while shrinking the size of our bloated federal government by reforming the way Washington considers legislation.

Thank you to all those whom braved the snow to attend the townhall. For those whom were unable to attend, I will continue to announce future events as they are scheduled via enewsletter, www.guinta.house.gov, facebook.com/repfrankguinta and twitter.com/repfrankguinta.

HOUSE PASSES MULTIPLE BILLS TO END HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human trafficking is a terrible tragedy that occurs far too often in our communities, our state and our nation. According to the FBI, human trafficking is the fastest-growing business of organized crime and the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world. That's why, I supported the passage of numerous bipartisan bills to protect victims of this horrendous crime and put in place real reforms to combat and ultimately end human trafficking.

COMMEMORATING SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK

Education is the silver bullet of success. Unfortunately, far too much power resides in Washington and not in the hands of teachers and parents. Many state and local governments -- and not parents or caretakers -- have the power to decide a child's school choice by forcing students into one-size, fits-all public schools. As a former mayor and also the father of two, I know firsthand that this approach does not work.

For these reasons, I joined thousands of families and schools in commemorating National School Choice Week by visiting two charter schools in the Greater Manchester area.

Our parents deserve to choose where their child will receive an education. It is my commitment to continue to expand and increase the opportunities for school choice.
